Sleep is more than rest for plasticity in the human cortex

چکیده
Abstract Sleep promotes adaptation of behavior and underlying neural plasticity in comparison to active wakefulness. However, the contribution its two main characteristics, sleep-specific brain activity reduced stimulus interference, remains unclear. We tested healthy humans on a texture discrimination task, proxy for primary visual cortex, morning retested them afternoon after period daytime sleep, passive waking with maximally or waking. restored performance direct both waking, which deterioration across repeated within-day testing has been linked synaptic saturation cortex. No difference between was observed. Control experiments indicated that wakefulness retinotopically specific trained field not due unspecific differences. The restorative effect sleep correlated time spent NREM electroencephalographic slow wave energy, is thought reflect renormalization strength. results indicate more than state but restores by actively refining cortical plasticity.

Fetal Vegf Genotype is More Important for Abortion Risk than Mother Genotype
Background VEGF gene has been reported to be related with many diseases and recurrent pregnancy loss in various studies. VEGF polymorphisms are risk factors for pregnancy losses, and generally studies report only women’s genetic analyses. To evaluate the association between VEGF A C405G, C460T, C936T and C2578A polymorphisms and spontaneous abortion, we studied the genotypes of spontaneously a...
متن کاملPI3K and mTOR inhibitor, NVP-BEZ235, is more toxic than X-rays in prostate cancer cells
Background: Radiotherapy and adjuvant androgen deprivation therapy have historically been the first treatment choices for prostate cancer but treatment resistance often limits the capacity to effectively manage the disease. Therefore, alternative therapeutic approaches are needed. Here, the efficacies of radiotherapy and targeting the pro-survival cell signaling components epidermal growth fact...
متن کاملSleep is more than a break from life.
Man spends one-third of his life in sleep. Sleep is not a passive state but rather an active process that if disturbed on a regular basis can even constitute a threat to man’s health. Sleep medicine is a fairly new discipline and until 1980 there were only few scientific publications on the theme. Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome was first described in 1976 by Guilleminault. Since then it has ...
متن کاملDNA-Based Vaccine Is More Efficient than Non-Pathogenic Live Vaccine for the Prevention of HPV16 E7-Overexpressing Cancers
Introduction: Vaccinology provides promising approaches for the control of various infectious diseases. Among different strategies, DNA vaccines offer attractive research opportunities for development of vaccines for induction of antigen-specific immunity owing to their stability, simplicity of delivery, safety and cost effectiveness. However, there is a need to increase their potency by the ...
متن کاملSleep Enhances Plasticity in the Developing Visual Cortex
During a critical period of brain development, occluding the vision of one eye causes a rapid remodeling of the visual cortex and its inputs. Sleep has been linked to other processes thought to depend on synaptic remodeling, but a role for sleep in this form of cortical plasticity has not been demonstrated. We found that sleep enhanced the effects of a preceding period of monocular deprivation ...
